Additional comments:
Whale Sharks are seldom encountered in the Azores. However this year they have been spotted in 2 of the Islands (Santa Maria and So Miguel)almost every day in the last 2 months. By the number of encounters with whale watching and fishing boats I can estimate at least 20 in Santa Maria and a undetermened larger number in So Miguel. The Tuna Fishermen are the most reliable source of information, they fish the great quantities of tuna that swim underneath the whale shark. According to local fisherman the number of Whale Sharks are around 200. I, personaly, cannot confirm these numbers, however I can confirm at least 7 different sightings on the same day.
