Additional comments:
The whale shark was encoutered between dives in the area, the location is an estimate. We were intentionally looking for whale sharks as we have sighted them in this area previously. There were 7 people on board all of whom where able to get in and snorkel with for a while. We were with the shark for 25 plus minutes and left to make our second dive while it was still in the area. At one point it came and swam below the boat so by comparing its size to that of the boat, it was about 9 meters in length. At times it would dive deeper and then return slowly to near the surface. It did not appear to be put off by our presence or overly curious about us.
