Additional comments:
This was a random encounter with a whale shark (i.e. unplanned, no prior information that there might be a whale shark in the area) while scuba diving with a small group of divers - which luckily included a professional underwater photographer.
The whale shark did not seem to be fully grown yet (our guess was approx. 7 meters length) and was circling our group for about 40 minutes.
